Put Christ into Christmas! (1)

Behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy.
—Luke 2.10

On July 14, 1789, Jean Lenoir, a cobbler living in an obsure side street in Paris, wrote in his diary, “Nothing of importance happened today.” Just a short distance away was the Bastille, and on that very day mob had stormed it. They killed the troops, freed the prisoners, destroyed the building, and started the French Revolution. This event changed the whole course of the life of France.

So, too often, it is with us at Christmas time. Busy with routine details of the holiday season, we are apt to ignore the fact that Christmas marks the birthday of Jesus, the most revolutionary event in history. Long accustomed to the chores of Christmas, we oftentimes go through the motions of the celebration without being aware that Christmas can have any real meaning for our own hearts.

Consider then the importance of putting Christ into our Christmas. For it is important that we ourselves gather with the Wise Men and shepherds before the manger of Bethlehem that cradles the King. There is nothing quite so gaudily and noisily out of place as Christmas without Christ.
