A Note on John 4.5-26 (27-30, 39-42)

A Note on John 4.5-26 (27-30, 39-42)

Certainly the story of the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well can be preached as an evangelism text. Jesus reached the woman through incisive questions and comments. Then she ran off, that scarlet woman of Sychar, and herself became an evangelist: “Come, see a man . . . Can this be the Christ?” (v. 29)

We see in her, though, even before Jesus became a part of her life, a natural generosity, a natural helpfulness (she responded to Jesus’ request). She has qualities that would later blossom in her newfound faith.

Most of us do.
